A social meeting will be held at Hawthorn Tram Depot on the first Monday of every second month commencing in July.
The dates for this year are Monday 4th July, Monday 5th September and Monday 7th November. The content will be entertainment and information about trams and our museum, with a presentation by a keynote speaker, usually supported by a PowerPoint presentation, slides of film.
Admittance will be by paying a minimum donation of $2 to our Tramway Development Fund. This donation goes towards the further development of the Melbourne Tramway Museum at Bylands, our society's major focus.
We urge you to attend and to donate as much as you can afford, as we need to raise substantial funds for future projects, and to prepare for tramcar operations again. Tea, coffee and biscuits will be available.

Sunday 17th April is a special Open Day at Melbourne Tramway Museum at Bylands.
Members are invited to come and help do some necessary work around the site commencing at 11.00am.
All welcome to just come after 1pm and have a look at the trams and other items on site. We’re planning to have some special sale items of hard to get books etc available on that day.
We expect to host members of the Historic Commercial Vehicle Association that day – so it will be a great opportunity to meet folk with similar interests.
Perhaps you have not been to Bylands for years? Perhaps you have lost touch with other members of the TMSV?
This is a great opportunity to renew old links.
We look forward to seeing you!

It's been a busy summer at Melbourne Tramway Museum Bylands, with lots of projects on the go.
A dedicated group of members have been having regular working days on Wednesdays. The Exhibition Goods Shed is looking good, thanks in large part to the donation of glass display cabinets, and a pleasant sitting area in the front of the Shed. A new outdoor sitting area has also been set up and the front, and a staff table and chairs out the back, allowing volunteers to relax over a cup of coffee or soft-drink and enjoy the stunning views of the Great Dividing Range.
The restoration of North Melbourne Electric Tramway and Lighting Co No. 4 has also been restarted. The exterior is starting to look much better, with painting almost complete and work has started on reassembling the interior and fitting out the cabs. The decision has been made to restore it back to mid 1920's M.&M.T.B. condition as U class 205, chocolate and cream paintwork and the retention of the M.&M.T.B. cabs and destination boxes. The goal of full conversion back to NMETL 4 condition will be some time down the track, which involves repainting of the chocolate to burgundy and significant alteration to the cabs, removing the windows and destination boxes.
MTM Bylands has also received a modest grant to improve the staff amenity, and a new fridge, water cooler and sound system have been acquired, with more things to come in the near future!
Anyone wishing to join us on our Wednesday working days are more than welcome, and encouraged to call Liam on 0404 207 633 for more details.

Although it has just hit winter, spring cleaning is still under way at the Melbourne Tramway Museum, Bylands. This year much work has been done. The sheds have had cleaning and organisation work done to them, making them more aesthetically pleasing and easier to walk around in. The trams have also had a good cleaning out which involved the removal and sorting of the things stored in them and a general tidying.
The Exhibition Shed has had a little of a rearrangement and visitors are now greeted by an “H” class apron by the front door. Additionally, a sales department has been started, selling tram related books and DVD's, and more items will be added to the sales department over time. Buying items that you plan on buying anyway from our sales department is a great way of supporting the TMSV.
Work at MTM Bylands has been ongoing with the recycling of anything that is not of use, and the sorting of things that are useful into places where they should be stored. This has involved, among other things, the cleaning of the crock shed and the partial emptying of the seatainers, which haven't held up that well over the years.
The points and track work outside the running sheds have been cleaned, and new ballast is being laid and levelled, making the area safer and look cleaner.
There is however still much work to be done at MTM Bylands and we appreciate all the help we can get - no matter what skills you have you too can help. Help us to clean up MTM Bylands and get it into ship shape condition!

Our new name. Just one more in a raft of major changes taking place within the TMSV.
As Secretary John Wayman explains in a longer piece in February's edition of Running Journal ... ‘the adoption of a new trading name by the TMSV is an exciting development that focuses on exactly what our museum at Bylands is. The name “Melbourne Tramway Museum” (MTM) is now a registered business name owned by the TMSV that replaces the unregistered name “Bylands Tramway Heritage Centre”.’
All over the world, Melbourne is known as one of the key tramway networks.
So the relaunch of Bylands marks another important stage in the rejuvenation of the Tramway Museum Society of Victoria as custodian of one of the great tramway collections of the world.
MTM Bylands now houses the largest collection of ex-Melbourne trams and associated equipment in Australia. There are over 50 vehicles in our collection.
The Secretary also makes the point that re-accreditation remains a major challenge for MTM because, the deadline for renewal having been missed, the process has to be started over.
Many more volunteers needed“This process means a lot of work, and we need many more volunteers to come forward to help us with the many tasks we will need to undertake at Bylands to achieve this goal,” John says.
So, given the achievements of the past 40-odd years, MTM welcomes you and your skills.

The Annual General Meeting of the Society was adjourned on 29th August 2009 with all business concluded except for acceptance of the financial statements which were still with the auditor.
Notice is hereby given that the Annual General Meeting will be reconvened at 5.00pm on Saturday 28th November to consider and accept the Statement of Accounts.
A light supper will follow the completion of the AGM, followed then by a social meeting which will feature a slide show of a variety of tramway and railway subjects from last century provided by long time members John Rawnsley and Doug Prosser. This should be an interesting show.
We’d like as many members, guests and potential new members as possible to come along to support the Society.
Hoping to see you there,
John Wayman,
Secretary.

As a part of the new safety requirements, All existing commercial rail operator accreditations in Victoria expire on 30 June 2008, or earlier by agreement under the outgoing Transport Act 1983.
Under the Victorian Rail Safety Act 2006 (RSA), rail infrastructure managers (RIMs) and rolling stock operators (RSOs) must be accredited to operate by the Director, Public Transport Safety (the Safety Director).
As a result, we will not be able to operate trams at the Bylands Tramway Hertiage Centre until all the relevant documentation is complete and reviewed by the PTSV who will then issue a new Notice of Accreditation enabling trams to once again operate.
From the 1st of July 2009, the Bylands Tramway Heritage Centre will be operating as a static museum until further notice.
